Cyber Crime Case Study – Missing Harddrive

This cyber crime case study looks at the risks of allowing third party contractors access to sensitive data.

This particular organisation had just purchased a new sever, and their IT provider (who was in another city) was unsuccessful at migrating the data from one of the previous hard drives. It was decided that the hard drive should be sent to the IT company so they fix the problem. The hard drive was sent and successfully received and the job was completed. When the IT company sent the hard drive back to the organisation, it never arrived. All efforts to locate the drive proved unsuccessful. The drive contains a significant amount of personal information and company information and is still unrecovered.
